The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012 [Text] : Economic growth is necessary but not sufficient to accelerate reduction of hunger and malnutrition, 2012

Резюме: The State of Food Insecurity in the World raises awareness about global hunger issues, discusses underlying causes of hunger and malnutrition and monitors progress towards hunger reduction targets established at the 1996 World Food Summit and the Millennium Summit. The publication is targeted at a wide audience, including policy-makers, international organizations, academic institutions and the general public with a general interest in linkages between food security, and human and economic development. This year's report also discusses the role of economic growth in reducing undernourishment. Sustainable agricultural growth is often effective in reaching the poor because most of the poor and hungry live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for a significant part of their livelihoods. However, growth will not necessarily result in better nutrition for all. Policies and programmes that will ensure Nutrition-sensitive growth include supporting increased dietary diversity, improving access to safe drinking water, sanitation and health services and educating consumers regarding adequate nutrition and child care practices.

Land Tenure Journal [Text], 2012

Резюме: On 11 May 2012 in a landmark decision the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) endorsed a set of far-reaching global guidelines aimed at helping governments safeguard the rights of people to own, manage and access land, fisheries and forests. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security outline principles and ractices that governments and other actors can refer to when defining policies, making laws and administering tenure rights to land, fisheries and forests. The Guidelines promote secure tenure rights and equitable  access to land, fisheries and forests as a means of eradicating hunger and poverty, supporting sustainable development and enhancing the environment. Providing poor and vulnerable people rights to access to land, fisheries forests and other natural resources is a key condition for sustainable livelihoods.

Joosten,  Hans[et al.]. Peatlands - guidance for climate change mitigation through conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable use [Text], 2012

Резюме: Peatland drainage - mainly for agriculture, grazing and forestry - and peat fires are responsible for almost one quarter of carbon emissions from the land use sector. Peatlands and organic soils contain 30 percent of the world's soil carbon but only cover 3 percent of the Earth's land area. Peatlands provide many important ecosystem services, including water regulation, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration and storage. Through conservation, restoration and better management, organic soils and peatlands can make a substantial contribution to reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. This report provides information on management and finance options to achieve emissions reductions and enhance other vital ecosystem services from peatlands. A decision support tree guides users through potential options for the management of both cultivated and uncultivated peatlands. The report also summarizes the methodologies and data available for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands and organic soils. Practical approaches are presented concerning measuring, reporting and verification, and accounting of greenhouse gas emissions. Country-specific case studies illustrate the problems, solutions and opportunities associated with peatland management.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. State of the World's Forests [Text] : 2012, 2012

Резюме: The 2012 edition of State of the WorldТs Forests focuses on the critical role that forests play in sustainable production and consumption systems. Forests provide esources for people, including a renewable source of energy. If the global economy is to be sustainable, the land-use principles, policies and practices that are collectively known as sustainable forest management must be used all over the world. Net carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will decline as long as new trees are planted to replace those that are used.

Soil carbon monitoring using surveys and modelling [Text], 2012

Резюме: FAO's National Forest Monitoring and Assessment programme has developed multi-purpose and multi-source monitoring systems that have traditionally helped countries to assess their natural resources and manage them in a sustainable manner. Now, as illustrated in this paper, they also support designing and implementing REDD-compatible monitoring of forest carbon stocks and their changes. We hope that the example provided in the paper will help and encourage other countries to improve their capacity to assess and monitor their soil carbon stocks. This would help us all to understand better the role and potential of mitigation of climate change.

Global forest resources assessment 2010 [Text : Electronic Resource : CD-ROM] = Evaluation des ressources forestieres 2010, 2011

Резюме: The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010 (FRA 2010) is the most comprehensive assessment of forests and forestry to date - not only in terms of the number of countries and people involved -but also in terms of scope. It examines the current status and recent trends for about 90 variables covering the extent, condition, uses and values of forests and other wooded land, with the aim of assessing all benefits from forest resources. Information has been collated from 233 countries and territories for four points in time: 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2010. The results are presented according to the seven thematic elements of sustainable forest management. FAO worked closely with countries and specialists in the design and implementation of FRA 2010 - through regular contact, expert consultations, training for national correspondents and ten regional and subregional workshops. More than 900 contributors were involved, including 178 officially nominated national correspondents and their teams. The outcome is better data, a transparent reporting process and enhanced national capacity in developing countries for data analysis and reporting. The final report of FRA 2010 was published at the start of the latest biennial meeting of the FAO' Committee on Forestry and World Forest Week, in Rome.

Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [Text] : Adapted by FAO Council, Rome, Itali, 29 November 2011, 2012

Резюме: The Second GPA reaffirms the commitment of governments to the promotion of plant genetic resources as an essential component for food security through sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change. It is based on the findings of The Second Report on the State of the WorldÒs Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and inputs from a series of regional consultations and experts worldwide. It updates the Global Plan of Action on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture that was adopted by member countries in 1996. Updating the rolling Global Plan of Action also strengthens its role in the implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The Second Global Plan of Action is thus current, forward looking and relevant to global, regional and national perspectives and priorities. The Second GPA is an agreed set of Priority Activities that directly address the new developments, opportunities and challenges facing plant conservation and use in the 21st century. These include new policies and international agreements that affect conservation, use and exchange of genetic resources, shift in food production trends, changing roles of public and private sector in crop improvement and delivery systems, advances in biotechnology, genomics and information technologies, new products derived from agriculture, impact of new pests, climate change and rapid urbanization on plant genetic erosion and vulnerability. The priority activities of the Second GPA addresses these developments to ensure that plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) continue to be available for current and future use for food security and sustainable agriculture.

Synthetic Account of the Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [Text], 2012

Резюме: Plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) embrace the diversity within and between crops and their wild relatives. This diversity has evolved over thousands of years in a dynamic interaction between nature and agriculture. Plant genetic resources provide the biological basis of world food production and security and hence contribute to economic development. By serving as building blocks for farmers and breeders to develop new plant varieties, PGRFA are an insurance for agriculture to overcome future challenges, such as climate and other environmental changes and increasing food demand. This synthetic account conveys the main messages of the Second Global Plan of Action and its priority activities.

Cryoconservation of animal genetic resources [Text], 2012

Резюме: The genetic diversity necessary to allow this adaptation is in a state of decline, and the genetic resources that remain are not utilized in the most efficient way. The State of the WorldТs Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture confirmed that a significant proportion of the worldТs 7000+ livestock breeds are at risk of extinction and that many countries lack the technical capacity to ensure the proper management and sustainability of their animal genetic resources. To address these problems, the Member Nations of FAO developed the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources (Global Plan of Action), which was adopted at the first International Technical Conference on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in Interlaken, Switzerland, in September 2007. The Global Plan of Action contains four strategic priorities areas that provide a basis for enhancing the sustainable use, development and conservation of animal genetic resources throughout the world. It calls on FAO to continue to provide technical guidelines and assistance and to coordinate training programmes in order to support countries in their efforts to implement the Global Plan of Action. Conservation of animal genetic resources is the third Strategic Priority Area of the Global Plan of Action. Conservation involves both in vivo maintenance and management of genetic diversity within livestock populations that are actively contributing to the livelihoods of their keepers or that are maintained in small numbers on research or demonstration farms and in vitro storage of genetic material that can be used at a later time to increase diversity in live populations or re-establish a population.

Balanced feeding for improving livestock productivity [Text] : Increase in milk production and nutrient use efficiency and decrease in methane emission, 2012

Резюме: In developing countries feed shortages notwithstanding, considerable potential exists to increase production levels across a range of growing, lactating and beef animals by addressing the problem of imbalanced nutrition. The data on improving milk production efficiency in dairy animals through balanced feeding suggests that there is considerable scope for enhancing milk production with strategic use of the existing feed resources. This is possible through the transfer of scientific knowledge, in an easy-to-use and easy-to-implement manner to milk producers. The aim should be to promote feeding of a balanced ration in sufficient quantities and containing all essential nutrients. This paper outlines an approach used by National Dairy Development Board, India to balance rations at the doorsteps of smallholder farmers. This initiative has relevance for many other developing countries.

Invisible Guardians [Text] : Women manage livestock diversity, 2012

Резюме: This publication presents an analysis of women's role in the sustainable use, development and conservation of animal genetic resources. The importance of small-scale famers and pastoralists as custodians of these resources is well recognized, but has never previously been disaggregated by gender. The differential roles of men and women have largely been neglected in studies of animal genetic resources management, but by piecing together several strands of argument and indirect evidence it can be concluded that women are the main guardians of livestock diversity.

Crop residue based densified total mixed ration [Text] : A user-friendly approach to utilise food crop by-products for ruminant production, 2012

Резюме: Crop residues are valuable resources since they form a bulk of ruminant feed in many tropical countries. Due to lack of effective management of these resources, unfortunately they are being burnt in some countries, causing environmental pollution. The present paper discusses a technology based on the formation of a complete diet in the form of densified feed blocks or pellets from straws mixed with minerals, oil seed cakes and other agroindustrial by-products. The methods for preparation of such total mixed rations, their use and impact have been presented. It is hoped that this technology will enhance income of farmers, decrease environmental pollution and help alleviate shortage of good quality feeds in tropical countries.

Резюме: Global production of fish from aquaculture has grown substantially in the past decade, reaching 52.5 million tonnes in 2008, compared with 32.4 million tonnes in 2000. Aquaculture continues to be the fastest-growing animal food producing sector and currently accounts for nearly half (45.6 percent) of the worldТs food fish consumption, compared with 33.8 percent in 2000. The AsiaЦPacific region continues to dominate the aquaculture sector, accounting for 89.1 percent of global production, with China alone contributing 62.3 percent of global production. Moreover, of the 15 leading aquacultureproducing countries, 11 are in the AsiaЦPacific region. A few countries dominate the production of some major species, such as carps by China; shrimps and prawns by China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam; and salmon by Chile and Norway. In terms of farming systems, extensive, intensive and semi-intensive systems are practised in all regions. In the AsiaЦPacific region, despite major technical developments in the aquaculture sector, small-scale commercial producers continue to remain the backbone of the sector, contributing the bulk of aquaculture production. In the past decade, a number of developments have contributed to the significant growth of the global aquaculture sector, namely: formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, plans and legislation; dissemination and use of applied research; and emergence of new domestic and international markets. Achieving the global aquaculture sectorТs long-term goal of economic, social and environmental sustainability depends primarily on continued commitments by governments to provide and support a good governance framework for the sector. It is encouraging that the experience of the past decade indicates that many governments remain committed to good governance. As the sector further expands, intensifies and diversifies, it should recognize the relevant environmental and social concerns and make conscious efforts to address them in a transparent manner, backed with scientific evidence. This document provides an overview of global aquaculture status and development trends as a synthesis of such status and trends in six regions of the world: AsiaЦPacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Near East and North Africa, North America and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Regional Review on Status and Trends in Aquaculture Development in Europe - 2010 [Text] = Региональный обзор состояния и тенденций развития аквакультуры в Европе - 2010, 2012

Резюме: In 2008, European fish and shellfish farmers produced some 2.5 million tonnes worth US 9.4 billion. European aquaculture is considered a world leader in the production of some high value species (salmonids, sea bass, sea bream, turbot) and contributes significantly to global aquaculture development through knowledge and technology transfer. Europe is a globally important and growing market for fish, with new aquaculture species being imported. Collaborative aquaculture networking continues to be strengthened, e.g. the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform established recently to improve communication between aquaculturists, researchers, consumers and policy makers. The recently renewed EU Strategy for the Sustainable Development of European Aquaculture aims to address growth challenges faced by the industry, and thereby to make European aquaculture more competitive, ensure sustainable growth and improve the sector's image and governance. Overall, key challenges include consumer safety, the sustainable use of resources, production development and better harmonization of the legislation at the European and national levels.

FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture [Text], 2012

Резюме: This edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture highlights the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in both food and nutrition security as well as economic expansion. The sector remains a major supplier of high-quality animal protein and supports the livelihoods and well-being of more than ten percent of the world's population. International trade in fish has reached new peaks as overall production has continued to rise. Yet, as the document underlines, an array of problems - ranging from the need for more effective governance to that of ensuring environmental sustainability - threatens to undermine the sector's valuable contribution to alleviating hunger and reducing poverty. Using the latest available statistics on fisheries and aquaculture, this edition presents a global analysis of the sector's status and trends.
