Анотация: The 2013 report goes beyond measuring
chronic food deprivation. It presents a broader suite of indicators that aims
to capture the multidimensional nature of food insecurity, its eterminants and outcomes. This suite, compiled for every
country, allows a more nuanced picture of their food security status, guiding
policy-makers in the design and implementation of targeted and effective
policy measures that can contribute to the eradication of hunger, food
insecurity and malnutrition. (fao.org) |

Indigenous peoples' food systems and
well-being [Text] : interventions and policies for
healthy communities, 2013 |
|
Анотация: Indigenous Peoples in cultural homelands
of the most rural areas of developing regions experience challenges in using
their traditional food systems and to ensure food security and health despite
the treasures of food biodiversity that could support well-being. This book
is the third in a series promoting use of local food systems by Indigenous
Peoples; the first defines the process to document local food resources, and
the second describes food systems in 12 diverse rural areas of different
parts of the world. Here we describe processes and findings from more than 40
interdisciplinary collaborators who created health promotion interventions
for communities using local food systems. Included are participatory
processes using local knowledge and activities specifically for local food;
global overviews of Indigenous Peoples' health circumstances, environmental
concerns, and infant and child feeding practices; and nine specific case
examples from Canada, Japan, Peru, India, Colombia, Thailand and the
Federated States of Micronesia. (fao.org) |

Анотация: This guide is intended to help extension
workers better understand the concept of risk, the situation where risk
occurs and management stategies that can be used to
reduce, or at least soften its effect. It is hoped that the guide will be
useful in assisting extension workers to provide farrmers
with advice on the kind of risk management strategies that they can employ to
deal with risk in their day-to-day operations. In this way extension workers
can help farmers recognize and understand the risks that they are likely to
face and assist them in making better farm management decisions that reduce
the negative effect of the risks encountered in farming. (fao.org) |

approach to three case studies, 2013 |
|
Анотация: An Innovative Accounting Framework
for the Food Energy Water Nexus. Application of the MuSIASEM
approach to three case studies This report presents the results of the
application of an integrated analysis approach, the Multi-Scale Integrated Assessment
of Society and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM), to
three case studies: (i) An analysis of the option
to produce biofuel from sugarcane in the Republic
of Mauritius; (ii) An exploration of the future of grain production in the
Indian state of Punjab; (iii) An assessment of two alternative energy sources
to produce electricity in the Republic of South Africa. The report provides a
summary of the final results and is organized in three sections: chapter 1
provides a general description of the multi-scale integrated assessment of
society and ecosystem metabolism applied to the food-energy-water
nexus-assessment; chapter 2 illustrates the application of the developed
approach to the three case studies; and chapter 3 summarizes lessons learned
in terms of strength and weakness of the proposed tool. (zaragoza.es) |

Facing the challenges of climate change and
food security [Text] : the role of research, extension
and communication for development, 2013 |
|
Анотация: The study report is based on case
studies from Bangladesh (Sulaiman, 2010), Bolivia (Pafumi and Ulloa, 2010), DR
Congo (Mbaye, 2010) and Ghana (Adjei-Nsiah
and Dormon, 2010) which were carried out with the
purpose of assessing needs and gaps with regard to the provision of
innovation support services for climate change adaptation. It took the form
of desk-studies complemented with key informant interviews. Research results
showed that climate change adds urgency to the need for adaptation in its
widest sense in the natural resources sphere (agriculture, forestry, natural
resources management, livestock and fisheries). The main message from the
study is that not only is technical change for farm-level adaptation and
mitigation needed, but also a change of policy and institutional regimes that
govern agricultural production, value chains and natural resource management.

Biotechnologies at Work for Smallholders:
Case Studies from Developing Countries in Crops, Livestock and Fish
[Text], 2013 |
|
Анотация: This book documents a unique series
of 19 case studies where agricultural biotechnologies were used to serve the
needs of smallholders in developing countries. They cover different regions,
production systems, species and underlying socio-economic conditions in the
crop (seven case studies), livestock (seven) and aquaculture/fisheries (five)
sectors. Most of the case studies involve a single crop, livestock or fish
species and a single biotechnology. The biotechnologies covered include some
that are considered quite traditional, such as fermentation and artificial
insemination, as well as other more modern ones, such as the use of DNA-based
approaches to detect pathogens. Prepared by scientists and researchers who
were directly involved in the initiatives, the authors were able to provide
an insiderТs guide to the background, achievements,
obstacles, challenges and lessons learned from each case study. The final
chapter of the book summarizes the background, challenges, results and
lessons learned from the 19 case studies. (fao.org) |

State of the art on the initiatives and
activities relevant to risk assessment and risk management of nanotechnologies
in the food and agriculture sectors [Text] : FAO/WHO technical paper, 2013 |
|
Анотация: This report was commissioned by
FAO and WHO with the objective of summarizing and analysing
the information that has become available since the 2009 expert meeting and
determining possible courses of action to be followed by FAO and WHO in this
matter. Following up on one of the recommendations of the 2009 FAO/WHO expert
meeting, the present report reviews national and international activities on
the risk analysis of nanomaterials in the food and
agriculture sectors that have been carried out since the meeting. It presents
national and international risk assessment and risk management approaches
that identify and implement strategies to address potential hazards
associated with the use of nanotechnology-related products or techniques.
Information on relevant regulations and risk assessment activities was
gathered from the web sites of national and international institutions,
organizations and governments. Those had been identified due to contributions made to the 2009
experts meeting and by searching the internet for keywords such as nanomaterial, food, regulation, and safety. Specific
reference to these web sites is given in the respective sections of this
report. It should be noted that terms used in this report reflect the
definitions applied within the various sources of information; no attempt was
made to align the terminology with definitions agreed to by the 2009 expert
meeting or other definitions applied internationally Ц for example, by the
Codex Alimentarius Commission. (fao.org) |

Food wastage foodprint
[Text] : impacts on natural resources : summary report, 2013 |
|
Анотация: This FAO study provides a global
account of the environmental footprint of food wastage (i.e. both food loss and food waste) along the food supply
chain, focusing on impacts on climate, water, land and biodiversity. A model has
been developed to answer two key questions: what is the magnitude of food
wastage impacts on the environment; and what are the main sources of these
impacts, in terms of regions, commodities, and phases of the food supply
chain involved - with a view to identify invironmental
hotspots related to food wastage. (fao.org) |

Toolkit [Text] : Reducing the Food Wastage
Footprint, 2013 |
|
Анотация: One-third of all food produced in the
world is lost or wasted from farm to fork, according to estimates calculated
by FAO (2011). This wastage not only has an enormous negative impact on the
global economy and food availability, it also has major environmental
impacts. The direct economic cost of food wastage of agricultural products
(excluding fish and seafood), based on producer prices only, is about 750
billion USD, equivalent to the GDP of Switzerland. The aim of the Toolkit is
to showcase concrete examples of good practices for food loss and waste
reduction, while pointing to information sources, guidelines and pledges
favoring food wastage reduction. The inspirational examples featured
throughout this Toolkit demonstrate that everyone, from individual households
and producers, through governments, to large food industries, can make
choices that will ultimately lead to sustainable consumption and production
patterns, and thus, a better world for all. (fao.org) |

Resilient livelihoods [Text] : disaster risk reduction
for food and nutrition security, 2013 |
|
Анотация: Through its disaster risk
reduction (DRR) activities, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO) seeks to protect livelihoods from shocks, to make food production
systems more resilient and more capable of absorbing the impact of, and
recovering from, disruptive events. Disaster risk reduction protects
development investments in the agriculture, livestock, fisheries/aquaculture
and forestry sectors, helping the world's most vulnerable people become food
secure. Disaster risk reduction is vital for ensuring one of the most basic
human rights, the right to food and freedom from hunger. Furthermore,
disaster risk reduction creates a multiplier effect that accelerates the
achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 1: the eradication of extreme
poverty and hunger. (fao.org) |

Improving governance of forest tenure [Text]
: a practical guide, 2013 |
|
Анотация: Recognizing increasing demands for
help in addressing this challenge, in particular from local-level
stakeholders, FAO initiated a multistakeholder
process that culminated in May 2012 with the Committee on World Food Security
endorsing the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of
Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (Сthe GuidelinesТ). Based on
principles of sustainable development and the fundamental role of land in peopleТs livelihoods and environmental resilience, the
Guidelines are intended to contribute to global and national efforts to
eradicate hunger and poverty by promoting secure tenure rights and equitable
access to land, fisheries and forests. (fao.org) |

Rediscovering Wood: The Key To A Sustainable
Future [Text] : International Conference and Exhibition on
the Art and Joy of Wood, |
|
Анотация: The conference attempted to
explore how the changing expectations of consumers and society shape the
future for wood products. It also intended to examine how producers and users
of wood can respond to these changes to identify potential opportunities and
strengthen sustainability in the sector. It focussed
on the social, aesthetic, cultural and traditional aspects of wood use and
how the strong linkages between wood and society could be used to support the
future development of the sector as a whole. (fao.com) |

National Forest Funds [Text] Towards a
solid architecture and good fnancial governance, 2013 |
|
Анотация: This working paper endeavours to address this gap. It is the outcome of a
joint initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) and the Deutsche esellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal
Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims to improve our
understanding of this stitutional mechanism and of
the frameworks within which they are established. After describing the key
elements of national forest funds, it discusses a set of elements that serve
as a starting point for developing a fund performance assessment methodology.
Drawing on some practical experiences of countries operating national forest
funds, it illustrates how different funds can be ompared
and evaluated. In times of tight public budgets, there is a growing need to
ensure that public investments are of good value for money and that
international înance (e.g. ODA, imate înance) is
translated into national action in the best way. This requires not only ef?cient and effective resource
allocation and usage, but also having in place appropriate monitoring and
evaluation tools and ensuring an overall robust ?nancial
architecture and good governance mechanisms. We hope this publication will
serve as a useful analytical contribution to this goal and to the ongoing
international dialogue on improving forest ?nancing for sustainable forest management. (E. Muller and H. Christ) |

Edible insects [Text] : future prospects for food and feed security, 2013 |
|
Анотация: Edible insects have always been a part
of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and
disgust for their consumption. Insects offer a significant opportunity to
merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security
worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food
security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial
scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support
livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. Edible insects are a
promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for
direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. This publication
will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in
sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the
expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.. (fao.com) |

Passport to mainstreaming gender in water programmes [Text] : key questions for interventions in
the agricultural sector, 2013 |
|
Анотация: As stated in The State of Food and
Agriculture (SOFA) 2010-2011, the agriculture sector is under-performing in
many developing countries, partly because women do not have equal access to
the resources and opportunities they need to be more productive. Women also
have less access to education, agricultural information and extension
services, technology, credit and other financial services. This booklet is
designed for field staff involved in the design, implementation, operation
and maintenance of water management projects for agricultural production. For
this reason the guide was given a pocket format, so professionals,
practitioners and other field staff can easily carry it with them to the
field. The purpose of the passport is to support them in mainstreaming a
gender perspective during planning, implementation and management of
agricultural water management projects and programmes.
The expected outcome is improved performance of water management projects and
systems, while strengthening the position of rural women or other
disadvantaged groups. (fao.org) |

Agricultural Mechanization in Sub-Saharan |
|
Анотация: One of the major mandates of FAO
is to assist member states to make their input supply and food production
chains more effective and efficient and at the same time provide farmers with
improved livelihoods. The goal is clear: to increase sustainable food
production. The effective and sustainable use of increased levels of
mechanization is one of the most important means of achieving this. But what
is required to best achieve this? This document outlines why and how a
strategy on mechanization can make a major contribution to the achievement of
the goal of increasing levels of agricultural production and improving the
livelihoods of farmers. These guidelines on the development and formulation
of a sustainable agricultural echanisation strategy
form part of FAOÒs approach on sustainable
production intensification. (fao.org) |

Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in
livestock production [Text] : a review of technical options for non-CO2
emissions, 2013 |
|
Анотация: Animal agriculture substantially
contributes to the world economy by providing food, jobs, and financial
security for billions of people. With increasing concerns over global climate
change and pollution, efforts are underway to reduce the overall
environmental impact of animal production. This document analyzes emission of
non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, an important segment of the
environmental footprint of animal production. It has been developed by a team
that included experts in animal/ruminant nutrition, manure and soil
management, animal and whole-farm modeling, and animal reproduction. Over 900
publications focusing on nutritional and manure management mitigation
strategies for methane (enteric or from manure) and nitrous oxide emissions
were reviewed and analyzed, and a synthesis of feed-, animal managementand manure management-based mitigation approaches
and interactions amongst them has been presented. This document will help
researchers, animal industry consultants, policy-makers, animal producers,
non-governmental organizations, and other groups with interest in maintaining
a viable and environmentally-responsible animal production sector to make
sound decisions on selection and adoption of effective and economically
feasible greenhouse gas mitigation practices. (fao.org) |

A global assessment of offshore mariculture potential from a spatial perspective [Text], 2013 |
|
Резюме: This publication was produced in
recognition that there is a growing need to increasingly transfer
land-based/coastal aquaculture production systems further offshore as a
result of the expected increases in human population, competition for access
to land and clean water needed to increase the availability of fish and
fishery products much needed for human consumption. Mariculture,
in particular offshore, offers significant opportunities for sustainable food
production and development of many coastal communities, especially in regions
where the availability of land, near shore space and freshwater are limited.
This publication provides, for the first time, measures of the status and
potential for offshore mariculture development from
a spatial perspective that are comprehensive of all maritime nations and
comparable among them. It also identifies nations that are not yet practicing
mariculture that have a high offshore potential.
The underlying purpose of this document is to stimulate interest for detailed
assessments of offshore mariculture potential at
national levels. Remote sensing for the sustainable development of offshore mariculture is included as Annex 3 to this publication in
recognition of the importance of remote sensing as a source of data for
spatial analyses to assess potential for offshore mariculture,
and also for zoning and site selection as well as for operational remote
sensing to aid mariculture management. (fao.org) |

(fao.org) |

Advances in geographic information systems
and remote sensing for fisheries and aquaculture [Text] : a summary
version, 2013 |
|
Резюме: This publication is an essential
guide to understanding the role of spatial analysis in the sustainable
development and management of fisheries and aquaculture. The publication is
an easy-to-understand publication that emphasizes the fundamental skills and
processes associated with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote
sensing. The required spatial data and computer hardware and software are
outlined, as well as the considerations necessary to implementing a GIS.
Current issues, status and applications of GIS and remote sensing to
aquaculture, inland fisheries and marine fisheries are described to
illustrate the capabilities of these technologies. Emerging thematic issues
having a spatial context in fisheries and aquaculture in the near future are
also described, and finally useful clues as how best
to overcome challenges to accomplishing GIS work are addressed. This
publication is organized in two parts: the first is a summary version for
administrators and managers, while the second contains the entire document
intended for professionals in technical fields and academics. The full
document is available on the CD-ROM that accompanies the summary version of
the publication. (fao.org) |

Construction and installation of hexagonal
wooden cages for fish farming [Text] : a technical manual, 2013 |
|
Анотация: This document is a practical guide
that includes a list and the technical details of materials to construct a
hexagonal wooden cage for fish farming, and its mooring system, for use in
artisanal aquaculture. Instructions for assembling the various components are
illustrated in detail, and technical guidelines for cage installation at the
farming site are also described. This manual also offers basic advice on the
choice of cage model and the components to be used based on the
environmental, logistical and social conditions of the site. The
physiological requirements of the species reared and their impact on
production levels are discussed with the aim of providing the minimum
information necessary for planning and setting up such an activity. This technical
manual also explains that it is possible, using the
illustrated cage model, to exploit environments that are more dynamic than
those in which artisanal aquaculture traditionally operates. Additional
technical information on the topics treated in the manual is provided in the
appendixes. (fao.org) |

Expanding mariculture
farther offshore [Text] : Technical, environmental, spatial and governance
challenges FAO Technical Workshop, 22-25 March 2010, |
|
Анотация: This document contains the
proceedings of the technical workshop entitled Expanding mariculture
farther offshore: technical, environmental, spatial and governance challenges
held from 22 to 25 March 2010, in Orbetello, Italy,
and organized by the Aquaculture Branch of the Fisheries and Aquaculture
Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO). The objective of this workshop was to discuss the growing need to
transfer land-based and coastal aquaculture production systems farther off
the coast and provide recommendations for action to FAO, governments and the
private sector. Offshore mariculture is likely to
offer significant opportunities for food production and development to many
coastal countries, especially in regions where the availability of land, nearshore space and freshwater are limited resources. The
workshop report highlights the major opportunities and challenges for a
sustainable mariculture industry to grow and
further expand off the coast. Furthermore, it recommended that FAO should
provide a forum through which the potential importance of the sea in future
food production can be communicated to the public and specific groups of
stakeholders and to support FAO Members and industry in the development
needed to expand mariculture to offshore locations.
This publication is organized in two parts. The proceedings include the
workshop report, and an accompanying CDЦROM containing six reviews covering
technical, environmental, economic and marketing, policy and governance
issues, and two case studies on highfin amberjack (Seriola rivoliana) offshore farming
in Hawaii (the United States of America) and one on salmon farming in Chile.

Report of the FAO Workshop on Bycatch Management and Low-impact Fishing [Text], |
|
Анотация: Workshop participants agreed that
the primary objective a regional action plan was to ensure the longterm livelihoods of those involved in the fisheries
sector through the adoption of responsible fishing practices and that
elements of the plan should interalia: (i) prioritize responsible fishing through embedding the
ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) in relevant ational
policies, (ii) minimize the impact of trawling on the sensitive habitats and
reduce the impact on vulnerable species, both target and non-target, (iii)
provide a rational approach to fleets for reducing bycatch,
discards and gear loss, (iv) adopt a comprehensive approach that recognizes
the differing environmental, economic and social conditions of the various
fisheries within the region, (v) raise awareness, train and incentivize
stakeholders about sustainable fishing Workshop participants also agreed that
the stages of the regional action plan should include as a priority: a
regional analysis and diagnosis followed by action implementation. (fao.org) |

Report of the technical consultation on flag
state performance [Text] , |
|
Анотация: The statement referred, inter
alia, to the flag StatesÒ primary
responsibility under international law to exercise effective control over their
fishing vessels and ensure compliance with elevant
laws and conservation and management measures. However, it was pointed out
that there had been increasing concern by the international community that
the performance of many flag States in the fulfilment
of their international obligations had been inadequate fishing and related
activities in geographic areas beyond the national jurisdiction of the flag
State. Consequently the burden to control these fleets had shifted
increasingly to others including coastal States, port States and regional
fisheries management organizations and arrangements This implied the need for
these States to develop human resources, compliance tools and up to-date mechanisms that were costly,
especially for developing countries. (fao.org) |
