Wildlife in a changing climate [Text], 2012

Резюме: FAO's new report, Wildlife in a Changing Climate, foresees that the rate of loss of wild animal species will be accelerated by climate change unless urgent measures are taken. Particularly at risk are wildlife and ecosystems in coastal and mountain areas, while Africa, where a mean temperature rise of 3-4 C is expected by the end of the century, is one of the world's most vulnerable regions. Using case studies, the report puts forward a series of responsive measures to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Adaptation to Climate Change in Semi-Arid Environments [Text] : Experience and lessons from Mozambique, 2012

Резюме: This publication documents the experiences, successes and challenges being faced in implementing the adaptation interventions in one of the remote districts where very few development agencies are operating. It identifies, at farm and community level, adaptive interventions that have been tested and applied and which have shown positive impact on productivity, broadening of the livelihood basis, and improving resilience to climate change. It also draws attention to those interventions that are not so promising and whose sustainability and expansion are questionable. Valuable lessons learned are highlighted in several areas crucial for the success of future projects and programmes in climate change adaptation.

Integrating Food Security Information in National Statistical Systems [Text], 2012

Резюме: This book aims at providing a better understanding of how food security indicators can be used for policy-making and planning. It also looks at ways in which statistics can be used to improve the reliability of food security information at both national and sub-national levels. It thus presents eight countries experiences in deriving food security information at national and sub-national levels from National Household Surveys (NHS). Part one summarizes lessons learned in improving food security statistics for decision-making. Part two deals with how food security is monitored at national and sub-national levels in four countries. The paper on Uganda analyses the food security statistics from the perspective of gender, while the papers on India and Tanzania are examples of trend analyses. Part three addresses approaches to measuring food acquisition and food consumption that can enhance estimates of food security. It examines methodologies in detail, and considers how food data collection affects estimates of food security statistics. Part four reviews the policy implications of food security and micronutrient statistics on agriculture and the quality of life in Bolivia. It also looks at the quality and availability of food in terms of micronutrients in Tanzania. Part five provides a glossary of terminology related to food security statistics.

Investigating the role of bats in emerging zoonoses m [Text] : Balancing ecology, conservation and public health interest, 2011

Резюме: With over 1,150 bat species worldwide - representing about twenty percent of the biodiversity of all mammalian species - they carry out important ecological and agricultural functions such pollination and dispersion of seeds. And while many tropical plant species depend entirely on bats for the distribution of their seeds, it is true that in the tropics bats can also be carriers of important diseases such as rabies, mokola, duvenhage, hendra or nipah viruses. These are the ones we know of today, but some 40 years ago, all we knew was about rabies.

Challenges of animal health information systems and surveillance for animal disease and zoonoses [Text], 2011

Резюме: Animal Disease Surveillance is key to improving disease analysis, early warning and predicting disease emergence and spread. As a preventive measure, disease surveillance is aimed at reducing animal health-related risks and major consequences of disease outbreaks on food production and livelihoods. Early warning systems are dependent on the quality of animal disease information collected at all levels via effective surveillance; therefore, data gathering and sharing is essential to understand the dynamics of animal diseases in diverse agro-ecological settings to support effective decision-making to prevent disease and for emergency response.

Community-based fire management [Text], 2011

Резюме: Fire is a natural disturbance event that has also been used by humans for millennia as a tool to manipulate their environment. Fire still plays an essential role in many societies today; however, fire is not always used appropriately and can often be damaging. The danger is exacerbated by issues such as changes in land use, increasing population in rural areas, inadequate or inappropriate policy, and climate change. Traditional fire management practices and contemporary approaches used in developed countries - and increasingly being adopted in developing countries - often do not adequately address the complex issues of fire management. Through its integrated approach, community-based fire management (CBFiM) has the potential to address many of these challenges effectively.

Good agricultural governance [Text] : A resource guide focused on smallholder crop production, 2011

Резюме: Good governance is a concept that is difficult to realize in its totality even in countries with strong institutions and an entrenched culture of democratic governance backed by sound political systems. It remains more an ideal to which countries strive by focusing efforts on bridging the gap between what is achievable and where they are now. The task is particularly daunting for developing countries with fragile institutions, weak regulatory frameworks and inadequate administrative capacities. In recognition of this challenge, this resource guide was prepared to promote good governance in the context of crop agriculture in countries of the Asia-Pacific region. It is targeted at training senior level public officials in the agricultural sector and elected representatives responsible for the management of their countryÒs agriculture and rural development sectors. Other target audiences include managers of non-governmental and civil society organizations, producer organizations and the private sector. The resource guide covers governance for the agricultural sector, principles of good governance, and agricultural governance in the context of sustainable intensification of smallholder crop production, sustainable crop diversification, seed supply and plant genetic resource management, access to inputs and improved production technology, and food safety. The publication also examines issues of governance relating to corruption and enforcement of rights.

Processing for prosperity [Text], 2. ed., 2011

Анотация: Existing skill levels within the farming family are normally sufficient to start a household-scale food processing enterprise as they will derive from traditional culinary knowledge. The technologies that are used for household-scale production are simple, easily adaptable and assimilated, cost effective and capable of being used with minimum training. However in some cases it will be necessary to train small-scale farmers in processing skills, especially in terms of improved food hygiene, quality and safety.

Fruit products for profit [Text], 2011

Анотация: Growing fruit trees as an enterprise requires only a very small plot of land, commonly a home garden, some labour and minimal capital but it can provide a plethora of products such as fresh fruits, jams, chutneys and pickles. By-products can be used for fermented products such as fruit wines, fruit waste can be used for animal feed, while fruit seeds and nuts can be pressed for oil. Encouraging and promoting fruit trees as a viable enterprise to small-scale farmers can only but enhance livelihoods. It is hoped that policy-makers and development personnel recognize the numerous opportunities that producing and marketing fruit can bring to small-scale farmers.

Spices and Herbs for Home and Market [Text], 2011

Анотация: Spice and herb plants do not require large land areas for profitable cultivation and can also be gathered from the wild. In the case of cultivation, growing can be achieved without excessive investments as many spice and herb plants can be produced with minimal inputs of cash, labor and land. They are often an ideal crop to be integrated into small-scale farming systems and are suitable for smaller garden production. This publication aims to create awareness about the potential opportunities and advantages for spices and herbs as a viable diversification enterprise to enhance the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. The focus is on spice and herb enterprises being integrated into small-scale farming systems, alongside traditional crops and livestock, and/or harvested from wild plants. Opportunities for value addition are also highlighted.

Rearing young ruminants on milk replacers and starter feeds [Text], 2011

Резюме: This manual presents comprehensive information on the preparation and feeding of milk replacers and starter feeds for pre-ruminants. Although the substitutes for dam's milk can be prepared from by-products of milk and feed ingredients that are not preferred for human consumption, awareness about such alternatives is limited in many developing countries. Therefore, popularisation of preparation and feeding of milk replacers and starter feeds using locally available ingredients is useful in promoting survivability and growth of young stock. The target audiences for this manual are livestock extension workers engaged in developing countries. The manual is also useful for students and teachers of ruminant production and for small scale industries and researchers that wish to produce milk replacers and starter feeds.

Product and Profit from Poultry [Text], 2011

Анотация: Home gardens that provide small-scale farm families with food and important surpluses to sell in local markets are now an integral element of many food systems. Many such gardens and backyards popularly raise poultry for family food requirements and for market. Poultry refers to domestic birds that produce eggs and meat that can be consumed and traded by small-scale farmers. Poultry down and feathers have also found multiple household uses and importantly numerous trade opportunities, while poultry manure is used as soil and farm pond fertilizer, hence contributing to increased crop and fish yields, and commercialization. Poultry manure is especially important to smallscale farmers who have difficulty in accessing and affording fertilizers, as well as those small-scale farmers who wish to make the best possible use of all the natural resources found and available on their farms.

Beekeeping and sustainable livelihoods [Text], 2011

Анотация: In nearly all countries of the world bees and their products are not only well known and have wide consumer preference, but provide sustainable livelihoods to many small-scale farmers and other rural and non-rural people. Bees offer a large potential with minimal investments. As an agricultural enterprise beekeeping does not require land ownership or rental, it can be started with equipment and tools that can be sourced locally and in many instances skills and knowledge required for such an enterprise are found within local traditions. As a business enterprise it offers not only diverse products, for example honey and wax among others, which can be sold in local markets and become an important source of regular income for farm families, but can also provide complementary services, such as crop pollination. Moreover bee products improve farm family nutrition and can provide for traditional health care remedies.

Review of the state of world marine fishery resources [Text], 2011

Резюме: his review consists of four major components. The first is a global overview of marine fishery production and the state of marine fish resources. The second part is divided into chapters that summarize and compile the information available for each FAO major fishing area, together with a discussion of the major trends and changes that have occurred with the main fishery resources exploited in each area and comments on the stock assessment work undertaken in support of fisheries management in each region. The third section is allocated to special topics that attract great attention in the international comunity, including tuna and tuna-like species, sharks, the Pacific islands region, deep-sea fisheries, and fisheries and long-term climate variability. The final part lists all the tables that provide details about historical and recent catches for the major marine resources and, where possible, assessments of the most current state of exploitation of fish stocks.

FAO/CITES Workshop to review the application and Effectiveness of International Regulatory Measures for the Conservation and Sustainable use of Elasmobranchs, Genazzano, Italy, 19 - 23 July 2010 [Text], 2012

Резюме: Concerns about the status of sharks and their often unregulated exploitation has led to a number of international initiatives to improve shark conservation, among them the FAO IPOA Sharks as well as the regulation of international trade through CITES of several elasmobranchs currently listed on one of the CITES Appendices. Progress in the implementation of the IPOA has been slow and the status of a number of shark species remains a concern which makes it plausible that sharks will continue to be proposed for inclusion in one of the CITES Appendices. The status of many sharks is unknown or poor but there are different views on the best course of action to improve the conservation of sharks. Some countries hold the view that regulation of international trade is necessary to ensure their use is sustainable, while other countries have expressed doubts that regulation of international trade - through CITES - is a suitable instrument for the management, conservation and sustainable use of commercially-exploited marine species including sharks. With these considerations in mind, this workshop, jointly convened by FAO and CITES was held in Genazzano (Rome) from 19 to 23 July 2010, and attended by experts from different geographic areas and sectors including scientific assessment, fisheries management, fishing industry, fish trade, monitoring and control, and government administration. The workshop tried to outline the strengths and weaknesses of the various types of regulatory measures and regulations and to discuss their effectiveness with regard to implementation and stock recovery, as well as their impact on fisheries, livelihood, food security, markets and trade, and government administrations. A key output of the workshop consists of a tabular summary of the discussed effects of different measures on various sectors. This table and the descriptions in the narrative part of the report are designed to assist resource managers in various regions and countries and under different fisheries development and shark management situations, in their decision-making regarding their own most appropriate management regulations for the conservation and sustainable use of sharks which concern them.

Review of the state of the world fishery resources [Text] : Inland fisheries, 2011

Резюме: The fishery statistics reported to FAO by countries and maintained in the FishStat database are analysed for trends in quantity and composition of catches from 1950 to 2009. Catches have been increasing at a steady rate throughout the period. Fish from inland water capture fisheries are an important source of animal protein, especially in landlocked countries and for populations riparian to lakes and rivers. Finfish contribute about 90 percent of the catch together with some crustaceans and molluscs. The accuracy of reporting of catches by taxonomic group has improved with time and more groups are being reported in 2009 than in 1950. At the same time, the percentage of catches assigned to the generic Уfreshwater fishes NEIФ category has declined. Trends in catches and taxonomic groups are analysed for subcontinental regions under a more general continental heading. The regions are divided mainly by geography, although in some cases economic and political considerations are used. Catches in the various regions of Africa, Asia and South and Central America have risen steadily over the period of the review, although there are local exceptions to the general trend. There is clear evidence that such increases are real in some individual fisheries, but generally the increases are attributed to improvements in reporting, whereby catches that were already there but previously ignored are now being incorporated into the reports. Catches in North America, and most of Europe, have declined in the same period, which is attributed to shifts in economic conditions that make fishing not longer financially viable, and a greater public demand for recreational fishing. Catches from eastern Europe and the Russian Federation declined from a maximum in the 1980s, but have shown some signs of recovery in the last decade. In general, the worldТs inland fisheries still appear viable although environmental pressures, such as damming, water abstraction and overexploitation, pose a potential threat to the maintenance of present levels of reproduction and recruitment, and hence, ultimately catch.

Governance of marine protected areas in the least-developed countries [Text] : Case studies from West Africa, 2011

Резюме: This document proposes an analytical framework to study the governance of MPAs in the LDCs. This analytical framework makes it possible to characterize the governance system of each of the MPAs considered and to develop a typology of these systems. The characterization of different governance systems highlights their weaknesses and paves the way for new public policy options and, more generally, for the restructuring of governance to correct these weaknesses.

Traditional fermented food and beverages for improved livelihoods [Text], 2011

Резюме: Small-scale on-farm fermentation enterprises are important both for stimulating sustainable development in rural and peri-urban areas of countries, and for making food available to the increasing populations in urban areas. It can play an important role in strengthening livelihoods of millions of people and reduce their vulnerability to poverty, through both income generation and by making an important contribution to dietary variety and food security. Small-scale on-farm fermentation enterprises also provide linkages to other income generating activities such as the manufactures of equipment, packaging and other ingredients that may be required for fermentation.
