Penchev, G., S. Vitanov, P. Georgiev and S. Georgieva, 1998. Effect of total body gamma irradiation on some structural elements in pig testes. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 16.

A histological study of testes of 3 groups of pigs non-irradiated, irradiated with 1.5Gy and irradiated with 2.5 Gy was carried out. The iradiation was performed when the pigs were 2-month old and the material for histological test was taken after castration 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months after irradiation. Histostructural changes in the testes of the 3 groups of pigs were established. The older the pigs were, the more distinct these changes became. They were expressed by different in degree changes in convoluted seminiferous tubules. A dose dependent tendency to delaying of seprmatogenesis and to increaseing of the relative number of abnormal tubules was found out. Significantly more severe changes in the histostructre of testes were observed in pigs, irradiated with 2.5 Gy.

Urumova, V., N. Raikova and J. Tyagunenko, 1998. A survey of resistance in salmonellae isolated from chicken broilers to twelve antibacterial substances. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 718.

Resistance in 58 S. Typhimurium strains, 12 S. Isangi strains and 15 S. Enteritidis strains isolated from broiler chickens during 1993-1995 was investigated. The tests were carried out using agar diffusion method by Bauer-Kirby and resistance was tested to ampicillin, carbenicillin, streptomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, erythromycin, nalidixic acid, oxolinic acid, flumequin and enrofloxacin. The analysis was made by cumulative curves, determination and statistical evaluation of percentages of resistant strains to the antibacterial drugs and estimation of resistance patterns. The isolates showed a high percentage of resistance (65-90%) to ampicillin, carbenicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin, about 20% resistance to nalidixic acid, 10% to streptomycin and kanamycin and about 5% of strains were resistant to gentamicin and chloramphenicol. No of tested Salmonella spp., resistant to oxolinic acid, flumequine or enrofloxacin were found. The most common resistance patterns were to ampicillin, carbenicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin simultaneously with or without resistance to nalidixic acid. The obtained results are compared to data from scientific literature.

I. Matev and S. Stanilova, 1998. Isoelectric focusing of LDH-isoenzymes in Eimeria tenella (Apicomplexa, Coccidiastages. Bulg. J.Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 19-22.

The isoenzymes of the enzyme Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH EC 1.1.1.27)  in oocysts of Eimeria tenella and in the mucosa of chicken ceca, invaded by high doses of oocysts of Eimeria tenella, were studied, using isoelectric focusing in agar gel (pH from 3 to 10). Isoenzymes of LDH, similar in regard of their isoelectric point and different  from the host LDH-isoenzymes were present in the oocysts and in the samples taken at the 72nd hour after the invasion (p.i.) . Differences in the quantitative relation among the 5 LDH-isoenzimes from the host cells, beginning from the 24th h p.i. were also determined, expressed mainly in the anode fractions of the enzyme.

D. Stoikov, I. Nikiforov and P. Ivanov, 1998. Susceptibility of various bird species to experimental infection with the virus of marble spleen disease in pheasants. Bulg. J.Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 2332.

Experimental infection with marble spleen disease was carried out in six bird species-pheasants, turkeys, chickens, ducks, Japanen quails and pigeons, which were inoculated intraperitoneally with materral from spleens of spontaneously injected birds. Despite the lack of clinical signs, various degrees of enlargement and marbling of the speen necre determined pathoanatomically, and lymphoreticular hyperplasia and intranuclear inclusion bodies typical of the 2uc group adenociruses were determined histologically. These lesions were manifested best between the 3rd and the 6th day after the inoculation. The reticular hyperplasia was dominant in the spleens of pheasants, turkeys and chickens. The lymphoid hyperplasia was dominant in the pigeons. The two types of hyperplasia were approximately equal in intensity in the ducks and Japanen quails. Specific precipitating antibodies in the sera were found between the 6th and the 9th day after inoculation. In the chickens and turkeys they were preserved for 9 months and can be observed in the yolks of the laid eggs.

D. Dinev, P. Georgiev, H. Hubenov, N. Zlateva and D. Bakalov, 1988. Changes in some hormonal parameters in halothane anaesthetized horses. Bulg. J.Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 33-40.

Experiments on six local breed halothane-anaesthtized horses were carried out. The schedule of anaesthesia included i.v. premedication with diazepam, followed by i.v. xylazine after 10 min. The induction was performed by ketamine hydrochloride. After the orotracheal intubation anaesthesia was maintained by 3-4 vol.% halothane. Its duration was 2.5 h, all horses were in dorsal recumbency and were breathing spontaneously.  Blood for determination of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyrotropic hormone (TSH), cortisol,  triiodo-thyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) was sampled from V. jugularis ( catheterized beforhand ), prior to anaesthesia, immediately after the induction of anaesthesia, at hours 1 and 2.5 (end of anaesthesia).

It was established that the activity of hypothalamus-pituitary gland chain increased after halothane anaesthesia. ACTH levels reached a peak between the induction and hour 1, afterwards they returned to normal values. Cortisol concentrations increased too from 12.8 ± 0.4 pg/ml at the beginning up to 46.5 ± 3.4 pg/ml at hour 1 and up to 27.4 ± 1.3 pg/ml at hour 2.5.

Dynamics of T3 changes differed from that in T4. During the whole experimental period T3 increased although the rate of increase varied during the different stages. Changes in T4 levels were manifested by a bi-phasic curve. Compared to T3 dynamics they revealed a new rule from a qualitative point of view.

Pascalev, M., 1998. Radiological studies on three types bone grafts in dogs. Bulg. J .Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 41-48.

In 18 dogs, divided into 3 groups (6 dogs each) ulnar bone defects were performed and three types of cancellous bone grafts were transplanted: fresh autocancellous bone, demineralized and freeze-dried allocancellous bone and demineralized and freeze-dried xenocancellous bone. Radiography, performed two weeks after the transplantation, showed a rapid osteogenic effect in autocancellous bone grafts, a poor periosteal reaction in dogs with allografts and partial or total resorption of xenografts. Two months following transplantation, the structure of new bone tissue was identical in the first two groups. The slowest osteoinduction was observed after xenotransplantation.

Philipov, Zh. and Ts. Grosev, 1998. Diagnostic value of bone turnover indicators in puppies with nutritional osteodystrophy.  Bulg. J.Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 49-52.

In 18 puppies with clinical and radiological signs of nutritional osteodystrophy due to calcium-deficient food, the following blood parameters were examined - total and ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, total and bone alkaline phosphatase, parathormone as well as the new bone markers tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, osteocalcin and carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen. The results was compared with those of a smaller number (six) of clinically healthy animals.

A statistically significant increase in osteocalcin and carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen were observed. This gave ground to use them in the diagnosis of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in domestic carnivores.

Key words: nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, puppies, osteocalcin, carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen.

Stanilova, S.,  Zh. Zhelev, S. Stanilov and L. Benov, 1988. In vitro and in vivo depletion of C3 of complement activity by lectin from Cuscuta europea. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 1, No 1, 53-58.

The effect of a new lectin, isolated from Cuscuta europea on complement system activation and phagocytosis has been studied. Inactivation of serum complement in vitro and in vivo has been observed. Immunoprecipitation investigations have demonstrated that this effect could be due to strong binding of the lectin to the third component of complement system (C3) and C3b subfragment of C3 complement component. It has been also demonstrated that the lectin exhibits a strong inhibition on superoxide production by zymosan-stimulated peritoneal macrophages. Based on these findings a conclusion is made that Cuscuta europea lectin possesses anticomplement activity and suppresses superoxide generation.
