Penchev, G., 2011. Postnatal development of interstitial endocrine (Leydig) cells in pig’s testes electron microscopy study. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 131-136.

The normal ultrastructure of interstitial endocrinocytes in testes of pigs aged from 1 day to 8 months was determined by electron microscopy. It was found out that these cells had similar ultrastructural traits during the entire experimental period a very well developed agranular reticulum of tubulovesicular type and numerous mitochondria with tubulous cristae, evidence for active steroidogenesis.

Yonkova, P. Y., P. K. Atanassova, A. P. Vodenicharov, R. S. Dimitrov & P. I. Hrischev, 2011. Enzyme histochemical expression of lipoprotein lipase in the liver and adrenal glands in clinically healthy rabbits. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 137-141.

The liver enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL) facilitates the release of cholesterol from lipoproteins and plays a key role in the synthesis of steroid hormones in the adrenal glands. For the current study, 6 male and 6 female clinically healthy New Zealand White rabbits, aged 3.5 months were used. Enzyme histochemical reaction (per Gomori) was performed on fresh cryostat sections, and through the Tween method, a strong positive expression of LPL in the sinusoid capillaries of the liver lobules, the lumen, and the smooth muscle cells of the walls of interlobular arteries and veins was shown. A moderate LPL expression in zona glomerulosa and weak expression in zona fasciculata were observed in the adrenal glands, whereas no LPL expression was found in both the cortical zona reticularis and the adrenal medulla.

Pourjafar, M., K. Badiei, S. Nazifi & S. M. Naghib, 2011. Acute phase response in Holstein dairy calves affected with diarrhoea. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 142-149.

The aim of this study was to evaluate serum concentrations of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), interferon-gamma (INF-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in dairy calves affected with diarrhoea during the first 4 weeks of life, with special reference to etiological agents. To study the acute phase reaction in infectious diarrhoea with E. coli k99, rota and corona viruses and Cryptosporidium parvum, 50 clinically healthy and 50 diarrhoeic calves 128 days of age were randomly selected. Blood samples were taken from jugular vein and serum concentrations of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), interferon-gamma (INF-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were determined. Although all studied acute phase response indicators were significantly increased in diarrhoeic calves, SAA and Hp were two major acute phase proteins that were remarkably increased (p<0.05) compared to healthy animals. According to this study, the SAA and Hp correlated with faecal scores and proved to be reliable indicators of the severity of diarrhea (Spearman rho = 0.22 and 0.23, respectively, p=0.05).

Daskalov, H., S. Atanassova, T. Stoyanchev & R. Santo, 2011. Application of near infrared spectroscopy for rapid noninvasive detection of Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth in foods. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 150-157.

Meat and cheese samples, artificially contaminated by three bacterial species: Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated by both microbiology and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The incubation of samples at 8 °С for 14 days did not result in significant increase in the number of inoculated microorganisms. During the entire experimental period, microbial counts remained within 101103 CFU/g product. Regardless of the low bacterial contamination, NIRS analysis has successfully distinguished the contaminated samples by the SIMCA model and exhibited specific spectral differences that could be used to differentiate the specific classes according to the bacterial species.

Dimitrova, D., I. Borissov, Ts. Chaprazov, T. Georgieva, S. Yanev & B. Pandova, 2011. Pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in dogs with experimental staphylococcal infection. Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 158-164.

The study investigated the effect of experimental Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection on enrofloxacin pharmacokinetics in dogs. After infection, serum blood enrofloxacin concentrations and the values of AUC0→¥, Cmax, Tmax and t1/2abs were higher. Other pharmacokinetic parameters (t1/2b, MRT) exhibited an insignificant decrease. The infection resulted in lower serum concentrations of ciprofloxacin, the main metabolite of enrofloxacin. Statistically significantly lower biological half-life, lower AUC0→¥, Tmax, Cmax and MR were also observed.

Atanasov, A., S. Yotov, A. Antonov & P. Kolev, 2011. Induction of oestrus and conception rates in Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes after fixed-time artificial insemination (a preliminary study). Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 165-170.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of oestrus induction and timed artificial insemination on conception rates in Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes. Fifteen lactating non-primiparous buffaloes weighing 550-650 kg, fed and reared uniformly, were included in the survey. The animals were submitted to transrectal ultrasonography and divided into two groups depending on the ovarian follicle size: Group I (n=8) with follicle size <10 mm and group II (n=7) with follicle size >10 mm. The Ovsynch protocol for oestrus synchronization and programmed insemination was used. The clinical signs of oestrus (uterine tone, oestral discharges, cervical passage), conception rates and oestrus signs in non-fertilized animals were determined. The results showed that follicle size could be used as a criterion in selecting candidates for oestrus and ovulation synchronization in buffaloes from the studied breed. Oestrus-related discharges were observed in considerably higher number of animals from group II (71.4%; p<0.05) as compared to group I (37.5 %). This oestrus synchronization and scheduled insemination protocols could be successfully used in Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes.

А histopathological analysis of 430 specimens of canine skin tumours obtained in the period 20002010, was performed at the Department of General and Clinical Pathology, Faculty of  Veterinary Medicine, Trakia University, Bulgaria. The tumours were classified according to the last World Health Organization classification. The incidence of benign and malignant neoplasms was 48.14% and 51.86% respectively. Among the total number of skin tumours, 250 cutaneous growths were diagnosed as  epithelial and melanocytic tumours and another 78 as mesenchymal skin and soft tissue tumours. The most frequently diagnosed tumours from the skin epithelial and melanocytic group were hepatoid gland adenoma (9.3 %), squamous cell carcinoma (8.6 %), hepatoid gland carcinoma (5.34 %) and basalioma (5.11 %). The most frequently diagnosed canine mesenchymal skin and soft tissue tumours were lipoma (5.58 %), fibrosarcoma (4.41 %), haemangiopericytoma (2.32 %) and haemangioma (2.09 %).

Sharifzadeh, A., A. Doosti & H. Ghasemi, 2011. Prevalence of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale at broiler chicken farms in southwest Iran.  Bulg. J. Vet. Med., 14, No 3, 179-183.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is a Gram negative, pleomorphic, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterial pathogen most known for causing respiratory tract infections in chickens. Ornithobacteriosis has been reported in almost all countries around the world. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of ORT in broiler flocks in southwest Iran. DNA was extracted from 230 collected tracheal swabs and lungs samples and amplified by ORT 16S rRNA gene specific primers using the PCR technique. ORT DNA was detected in 63 broiler chickens samples (27.39%). The results of this study demonstrate the wide spread of ORT in broiler chickens and confirmed that infection with ORT was highly prevalent in southwest Iran.
